Sleep was never supposed to be the specialty. It became one because it kept walking through the door attached to everything else.
Twenty-three years on the training floor produces a particular kind of education. You watch a few thousand people try to change something about themselves, and you find out quickly which advice survives contact with a real life and which advice only ever worked on paper. Somewhere in the middle of that, a pattern got impossible to ignore: the clients who weren't progressing almost always weren't sleeping. And every single one of them had been told the same short list of things, had tried the same short list of things, and had concluded from the failure that they were simply built wrong.
They weren't. They'd been handed a checklist and called it a method. So PJ started building an actual one — case by case, client by client, keeping what held and discarding what didn't. Over the years it resolved into three domains and one taught skill, and it became clear the taught skill was the part nobody else was offering. Functional Sleep Therapy is what came out the other end: non-clinical, unmedicated, and refined against more than a decade of practical application rather than assembled from a literature review.
You can’t be blamed for what you don’t know.
The other half of the story is technical. PJ builds and runs local AI systems — hardware, models, and infrastructure — as a working practice rather than a hobby, which is why the coaching tool now in development is being built rather than outsourced. The intent is not to replace the practitioner. It is to put a decade of practitioner judgment inside the seven nights between sessions, where it has never been available before.
PJ also runs Fitness Brainiac, a private personal training practice in Agoura Hills, California.
